Youth Hunter Program

WSF Alberta Youth Hunter Sheep Camp Coordinator

The 4th Annual Youth Hunter Sheep Camp was another huge success. Twenty-five boys and girls enjoyed a very full weekend of learning about many aspects of sheep hunting and wilderness adventures. These kids came from all over Alberta, some traveling over 200 miles to be there. The directors of the Alberta Chapter support this camp because one of their main goals is to get young people involved in sheep hunting.

The camp was started in 2003 for the purpose of giving kids from
11 to 17 years of age some basic skills and knowledge about sheep habitat, firearms use and safety, wilderness survival, hide preparation and field care of trophies, and horsemanship. In the last two years, we also added fly-fishing and fly tying. The camp is fully funded by the Alberta Chapter so all kids can have an opportunity to attend. This year we had a donation from Chris McCann in Edmonton who specified that the funds were to go toward youth education. We also get donations from various businesses so the kids have things to take home. This year they got water bottles and Frisbees from Husky Oil, whistles and key chains from Fish and Wildlife, and caps and lawn chairs from WSF Alberta.

The camp is held at the Alford Lake Conservation Center west of Caroline. The facility and expertise of the staff are a huge part of what make the camp successful. I worked with Ted Hanson, the camp manager, to develop a program for the weekend. His experience with young people helped me run this camp and make sure everything ran smoothly.

We have set the dates for this year (June 12-14, 2009) and we are excited about the program possibilities we have for the campers.
